Antique 18K Gold Sardonyx Cameo Brooch Alexander the Great Pin
Alexander the Great rides triumphantly on his horse drawn chariot with the winged goddess Nike by his side, in this scenic and large sized oval sardonyx and 18K gold cameo brooch, circa 1840s.
The neoclassical Victorian cameo depicts the Macedonian general during his victory in Babylon – and is carved in high relief on hard stone sardonyx and based on the 1812 marble frieze “Triumphal Entry of Alexander into Babylon” by sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, in a special commission for Napoleon’s visit to Rome.
The cameo itself is set in an unmarked 18K gold frame, which also has 8 open or empty claw mounts – which can be set by a jeweler with stones or pearls, if desired, or left as is.
The brooch also has a tube hinge and hooded c-catch, measures approximately 2&3/8 inches wide at its widest point by 1&7/8 inches high, and weighs 30.8 grams.
