Victorian Sterling Silver Bird Mourning Brooch Locket Pin Memento Mori
A tiny engraved bird-in-flight is featured on this antique Victorian sterling silver mourning brooch and locket, with compartment for holding a small portrait or lock of hair, circa 1860s-1870s.
The finely hand engraved Aesthetic Movement memento mori is crafted from unmarked sterling silver, and has an oval base, a scalloped layer with hand chased and engraved flourishes, and a trim of silver beaded accents.
At its center, is a small dove or bird, representing the passing of the ‘winged soul’.
The reverse of the brooch has a locket compartment with glass cover and fitter ring, for storing a lock of hair or small photo, along with hand wrought fittings consisting of a tube hinge and c-catch, and attached safety chain with small pin.
It measures approximately 1&5/8 inches wide by 1&3/8 inches high, and weighs 12.7 grams.
